One person is missing after a water incident south of Waimate last night.

Police told 1News they were notified at 7pm yesterday a person was missing from a boat on the Waitaki River in South Canterbury.

Coastguard confirmed it was called to assist police with the search at around 11pm and was "out searching all night".

"They have been unable to locate the individual and are currently returning to base to await further police instructions," Coastguard said.

Police said they were continuing the search for the missing person.
