A man has been rescued this morning after being trapped under a steel pole six metres underground.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called to the workplace incident in Auckland's Sandringham at 9am. FENZ said the man was "trapped under a steel pole six to seven metres below ground".
"He is no longer trapped, and police and ambulance extracted him from the hole."
The man was taken to Auckland Hospital for treatment. WaterCare told 1News the worker received "minor injuries".
FENZ said seven fire units were at the scene.
The man was working on Watercare’s Central Interceptor project, a tunnel between central Auckland and the Māngere wastewater treatment plant.
Watercare said in a statement today: "A subcontractor was this morning injured at the Watercare Central Interceptor Haverstock Rd site, Sandringham.
"He was trapped between a sheet pile (similar to a retaining wall) and a beam whilst working inside a six-metre deep concrete chamber."
They said the man "was not involved in tunnelling operations" and the site will remain closed for the rest of the day.
Watercare's Shayne Cunis added: "The health and safety of our staff and contractors is our number one priority and we will be thoroughly investigating this incident".
He said Worksafe has been notified.
