A dairy worker was taken to hospital with a head injury after an alleged robber assaulted them with a BB gun "which broke on impact" in Hastings last night.

Officers were called to a Frederick St dairy in Mahora around 6.35pm after a man had allegedly entered the store and assaulted a staff member with a BB gun, "which broke on impact", police said.

The man fled the scene empty-handed but police put up scene cordons, where the man was spoken to.

"Once CCTV was obtained, the suspect was identified and police located him at his home address in Raureka a short time later," Senior Sergeant Craig Vining said.

"Police are providing support to the victim, who was transported to hospital with a head injury."

Vining thanked members of the public who provided "critical" information to identify and locate the man alleged to be involved.

The man, 41, is due to appear before the Hastings District Court today on a charge of assault with intent to rob.
