Friend of Bondi security guard says 'his last moments were brave'

A friend of security guard Faraz Tahir, who was one of six people killed at Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday, says police told him "his last moments were brave".

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, friend Adnan Qadir said Tahir, 30, was helping out after a late staffing shortage at the mall when he and another guard were attacked by Joel Cauchi.

"I've spoken to police and they told me his last moments were brave, while they couldn't go into the details," Qadir told the SMH.

"That doesn't surprise me because he always put others first. Whenever we had a charity event or volunteer [events], he would be the first person to put his hand up."

Tahir moved to Australia from Pakistan in 2022, having wanted to make the move so he could practice his religion freely — he was a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

He had helped pay for his sister's wedding and brother's medical bills after he was injured in a car crash.

In Australia, he had recently volunteered for a rubbish clean-up event.

"He really did have such a big heart," Qadir said.

"I remember the last time I saw him, for Eid celebrations, he was talking about how he wants to help more people. He had big plans for his life in Australia and hoped to bring his family here, but he also was just a nice guy who loved cricket."

Tahir was the only male victim of Cauchi's rampage. The others to lose their lives were Ashlee Good, Dawn Singleton, Jade Young, Pikria Darchia and Yixuan Cheng.
