Below is a recap of 1News' live updates after a man fatally stabbed six people at a shopping centre in Sydney's eastern suburbs before being shot dead by police.
What you need to know:
- Emergency services responded to the scene at Westfield Bondi Junction Shopping Centre around 3.45pm yesterday.
- At least six people were killed in the stabbings, with 12 others taken to various hospitals in the Sydney area with injuries ranging from serious to critical.
- The attacker was shot and killed by police at the scene.
- Police have identified the offender as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi from Queensland.
Multiple ambulances, police cars and a police helicopter were present outside the mall in eastern Sydney.
According to Australian media, a nine-month old baby and their mother were reportedly among those injured. The mother was later reported to have died in hospital.
Video taken at the scene showed people running from the shopping centre.
One witness told 9News a man chased the attacker, shouting "you've just stabbed my wife".
The attacker approached the witness holding the "massive" knife before going up an escalator to another level.
"The attacker was very casual, he was just walking along. He had some sort of rugby or football shirt on but he was carrying the knife.
"Maybe five minutes later, then we heard the gunshots. So we didn't know whether the gunshots were upstairs or on the other side of the centre, so just everybody was panicking."

Waverley Council said in a post to its Facebook page on Saturday night that the centre was locked down amid reports of "multiple stabbings".
"Please avoid any unnecessary travel to the Bondi Junction CBD."
