"To you, he's a monster but to me, he was my son."

He also added he "couldn't believe" what had happened and was torn by his son Joel's actions.

"He's a beautiful boy, everybody knows him."

He said he knew his son had combat knives, and he had accused Andrew of stealing knives in the past.

Andrew also said his son had "no social skills" and had schizophrenia.

"We need to do something about mental illness ... because it's so easy for someone with mental illness to flip and go crazy."

The father added he had worked out his son was "targeting women" when he watched news footage from his son's attack.

Joel Cauchi killed six people and wounded at least 12 others during his rampage at Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday.

The 40-year-old was shot dead soon after by a police officer.

Earlier, Andrew Cauchi reportedly lashed out at the Australian media, citing a lack of "compassion".

"How do you think I feel? How’s your sensitivity?" he said, according to The Daily Mail.

"I felt alright until you got here."
