Bollard-wielding man says Bondi killer had 'empty eyes'

The man who tried to hold off the Bondi mass murderer with a bollard says he's not a hero — that title belongs to the police officer who shot Joel Cauchi dead.

Frenchman Damien Guerot and friend Silas Despreaux were at Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday afternoon when Cauchi carried out his horrendous attack.

He fatally stabbed six people and injured many more.

Guerot and Despreaux confronted the knife-wielding killer, with the former seen on video trying to hold Cauchi off with a bollard at the top of an escalator.

Guerot told 7News he was heading to the gym when he heard someone screaming.

They ran to see what was happening and saw Cauchi heading their way.

"We just saw him coming ... we were thinking, 'We need to try to stop him'," Guerot said.

They followed him from the floor above and came face-to-face with the killer as he came up the escalator.

Guerot said 40-year-old Cauchi had "empty eyes".

"He wasn't there," he said.

"We tried to throw the bollard. We really wanted to stop him."

Shortly afterwards Inspector Amy Scott shot Cauchi dead as he raised his knife towards her.

"She was the hero, she did the job. We just did what we did," Guerot said.

All six of the deceased have been named.

They are 38-year-old osteopath Ashlee Good, whose nine-month-old daughter was also injured, Dawn Singleton, the 25-year-old daughter of multi-millionaire businessman John Singleton, 47-year-old architect Jade Young, 30-year-old security guard Faraz Tahir and 55-year-old artist and designer Pikria Darchia.

This morning Chinese student Yixuan Cheng, who is believed to be aged in her 20s, was confirmed as the sixth fatality.
