CCTV footage has captured the moment a runaway racehorse trotted along a Sydney train platform, to the shock of onlookers.

In a statement to 1News, Transport NSW said the horse was spotted making its way onto the platform of Warwick Farm station shortly before midnight on April 5.

"A horse can be seen on security footage entering the train station from the car park, before pacing up and down the platform for about five minutes," it said.

The horse was spotted making its way onto the platform.

As a train pulled into the station, the horse patiently watched and waited for it to stop — even keeping its toes behind the yellow line.

"The horse had planned its journey but got colt feet and decided to hoof it," Transport NSW said.

Video shows onlookers stepping back in surprise as the unexpected guest made its way along the platform.

The horse patiently watched and waited for it to stop — even keeping it's toes behind the yellow line.

A spokesperson said the Sydney Trains security team was alerted, and trains in the vicinity were warned to run at reduced speeds.

Sydney Trains chief executive Matthew Longland told 9News that staff were warned a passenger was "horsing around".

"This one was a little bit unusual, as it was a horse at a suburban station," he said.

"The good news is the horse was captured, and it's obviously healthy and unharmed."

The horse's trainer arrived at the scene a short time later, before it was collected and taken back to its stable, according to 9News.
