A woman has been hospitalised after falling through a travelator, leaving her trapped in a Shanghai supermarket, the BBC reported.
The woman's lower body fell through the travelator, which had a missing floor plate, last week. After being trapped for roughly half an hour, the woman was rescued by firefighters.
Her husband told media his wife was in intensive care and had undergone two operations.
She also needed a skin graft and was at risk of infection and amputation.
The deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration for Market Supervision (SMAMS), Su Dongjun, told the China Central Television network that all teams involved in the running of the travelator were under investigation.
Su said the incident was caused by the travelator's pedal fixing ring moving out of place, which led to the pedal falling off and the failure of the travelator's automatic stop function.
The Shanghai government earlier this week announced that an investigation into the city's escalators and travelators found that of the more than 4000 inspected, over 100 escalators and travelators had technical problems.
Escalator and travelator incidents can cause life-changing injuries and death.
In 2019, an engineer working on a travelator in London had died at the scene after becoming trapped while working.
In China, an incident in 2015 saw a woman dead after falling through an escalator at a shopping centre.
