It's hard to miss the news about the total solar eclipse stretching across Mexico, the US and Canada today – but when will New Zealand get one?

According to TimeAndDate.com, Aotearoa will see its next total solar eclipse between 3.03pm and 5.23pm on July 22, 2028.

While the entire country will be able to view a partial solar eclipse, only those in Otago, Southland, West Coast and Canterbury would see a total solar eclipse sometime between 4.14pm and 4.18pm.

That's just over four years of waiting for those curious about the rare event which hit North America today.

The eclipse excitement captivated the region, with online flight tracker FlightRadar24 showing a massive amount of air traffic following the event.

Millions of residents across Mexico, the United States and Canada craned their heads toward the sky today to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon.

The path of totality stretched from Mazatlán, Mexico to Newfoundland, an area across 15 US states and over the heads of 44 million people.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters joined in on the buzz, and observed the eclipse from New York shortly after his speech to the United Nations General Assembly.
