A person has died on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Tongariro National Park around 9.23am, a police spokesperson told 1News.

"Despite the best efforts of those involved, the person died a short time later."

The Department of Conservation acknowledged the death today in a media release.

"It is with great sadness that Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro and Ngati Tūwharetoa acknowledge a recent death in Tongariro National Park," DOC said.

A rāhui has been placed on the track for three days with support from DOC, police and New Zealand Land Search and Rescue.

It would be lifted at 6am on Friday, April 12.

"To show respect, all hikers in the area are asked to consider using alternative tracks during the rāhui."

Transport operators for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing have been made aware of the rāhui.

The popular tramping track spanned 19.4km and tooks six to eight hours to complete, according to the Tongariro Crossing website.
