Window smashed as rock thrown at Napier bus, nearly hits driver

April 7, 2024

A rock thrown at a Napier bus smashed through the vehicle's front window, narrowly missed the driver, and landed in the lap of a passenger earlier this week.

Police are now looking for the person who threw the rock, though they "understand there may have been no malicious intent".

The incident took place at around 1.50pm on Friday "when a rock is believed to have been thrown through the window" while the bus had been travelling south along Willowbank Ave, towards Meeanee.

Senior Sergeant Kevin Stewart said: "The rock narrowly missed the driver, and a passenger in the bus, before falling onto the passenger's lap.

"The driver was able to slow the bus and bring it to a stop near the Meeanee shops, and organise a new bus to continue the journey.

"While we understand there may have been no malicious intent, it is very lucky that no one was hurt, as there could have been incredibly serious consequences."

He said the bus had teenage passengers when the rock struck.

"Police are conducting inquiries to identify and locate those involved, and what occurred. If you happened to have seen someone throw the rock, or this was you, we'd be keen to hear from you."

People with information are urged to call 105.
