Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk says the Government can make it easier and cheaper to build with new materials while avoiding another leaky homes crisis.

He told Q+A today: "We need to achieve a rebuilding of the economy overall as Government, and as a part of that, the building construction sector absolutely needs to be able to build much more simply, more cheaply and much more quickly.

"We've got New Zealand standards. But out there in the world, there's a whole heap of other jurisdictions that have got equal or higher standards, that we can measure our own products against, and also products of those overseas jurisdictions."

Penk, who is also the Veterans Minister, was also asked about whether New Zealand treats its service people with the respect they deserve, and changes that have been made to the Veterans' Independence Programme.
