Spectators at a Dunedin speedway had to run for cover as a car was catapulted over a safety fence into the public viewing area during a crash last night.
Dramatic footage shows the two cars making contact during a streetstocks race at the Beachlands Speedway on Friday night.
In the video released on the Beachlands Speedway Facebook page, a green car appears to hit the rear of a dark coloured car as they both round the curve of the speedway.
This caused the dark car to roll and the green car to be launched into the air, clipping the top of the safety fence and landing on its roof in the public viewing area.
Luckily, no one was injured in the incident.
One of the car's drivers commented on the Facebook post, assuring fans that both drivers involved were uninjured.
"Well built cars and good safety gear," he said.
Others applauded how the speedway handled the incident.
"Lights went red before cars had finished rolling and the response time and of the safety crews and officials was good, even switching off the power."
Beachlands Speedway president Matt Stewart described it as a "one off freak accident" and directed all inquiries to Speedway New Zealand.
Speedway NZ general manager Aaron Kirby said he was "incredibly thankful" no one was injured in the incident.
"With both competitors and spectators alike making it home safe, we are currently undergoing an internal investigation into the matter in order to better understand what learnings may come from the incident."
