New Zealanders can generally expect good weekend weather in the coming days – but it won't last forever.

"Get ready for a settled weekend, but rain's on the horizon next week," MetService said on X. "This could mean a few wet days, starting in the southwestern South Island on Tuesday, with the rest of the country likely to see rainfall in the following days."

Meteorologists were "keeping an eye" on next week's front, the service added on its website.

"The new working week will bring the next weather system of concern," MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris said.

In the meantime, a large area of high pressure sliding across the country was good news for those wanting to get out and about before daylight saving ended on Sunday.

"The weekend should see some drier and brighter weather for much of New Zealand," Ferris said.

Today

MetService's short forecast, issued this morning, painted a fairly rosy picture.

Northland was in for "cloudy periods with isolated showers clearing early this afternoon" while Coromandel and Bay of Plenty would see "isolated showers, clearing from Bay of Plenty tonight and Coromandel early tomorrow".

Auckland, Waikato, Waitomo and the central high country would be under areas of cloud this afternoon while Gisborne and Hawke's Bay could expect some showers, becoming isolated tonight.

Taranaki to Wellington including Wairarapa was mostly fine, MetService said – while Marlborough, Canterbury, Nelson and Buller were "fine in the west, mostly cloudy elsewhere with isolated light showers clearing tonight".

Westland, Fiordland, Otago and Southland were mainly fine while the Chatham Islands faced cloudy periods.

Saturday

Showers were expected to develop early and then clear later in Northland, while Auckland was also expected to see isolated light showers tomorrow morning, MetService said.

Showers in Gisborne and Hawke's Bay would clear south of Wairoa early tomorrow while Taranaki to Wellington and Wairarapa remained mostly fine. Marlborough, Canterbury, Nelson and Buller were fine with a touch of morning cloud.

Isolated showers about coastal Southland and Clutha would clear tomorrow while Westland, Fiordland and Otago looked mainly fine, and the Chatham Islands were in for a "few light showers" tomorrow evening.

Sunday

Sunday was more of the same with a generally positive, clear picture.

"North Island: A few showers in the east, otherwise fine," MetService said.

"South Island: Fine, but cloudy with a few showers for Fiordland."
