The family of a sushi shop owner seriously injured in a stabbing on Auckland's North Shore late last week has thanked the "heroes who were present at the time of the incident."

Emergency services responded to reports of an assault at a premises in Browns Bay at 5.48pm on the evening of March 28.

The victim of the assault was transported to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries while the offender responsible died at the scene from a "self-inflicted injury," police said.

"On behalf of our mother Marie, we sincerely thank each and every one of you for your support throughout this tragic event," the handwritten note attached to the door of the shop said.

"We are going through very tough times but we are blessed by those who have us in their thoughts and prayers."

The note said doctors had advised the victim's condition was stable at present.

"We have the utmost faith that she will make a full recovery," the letter read.

"We also want to personally thank those heroes who were present at the time of the incident."

The Browns Bay Business Association also placed a note at the shop, saying the quick action of those passing by "no doubt assisted in giving Neco Sushi's owner a chance of survival.

"We salute them for acting so bravely under extremely stressful circumstances."

It also said the attack was not random but an "act of domestic violence."

"Our close-knit community has been rocked by this uncharacteristic incident. Look out for each other."
