April Fools: New Zealand's best hoaxes, jokes and pranks

Domino's has released a new pizza-flavoured cereal for April 1.

Marmite and chocolate ice-cream, pizza-flavoured cereal, and a famous sporting bachelor were just some of the pranks that Kiwis may have fallen for this April Fools Day.

The first day of April presents an opportunity for people to have a little fun, and our businesses, retailers and institutions are no exception.

Here are some of the best hoaxes and pranks that sought to catch Kiwis unaware this April Fools:

Domino's released the aptly named Domin-O's, the pizza restaurant's first foray into the breakfast cereal market.

Made with twice-cooked pizza dough for extra crunch, succulent pieces of pepperoni and gooey mozzarella, the product purports to be the "new breakfast of champions".

Subway sprinkled a bit of a nostalgia into the day with the announcement of a new footlong fairy bread, causing many fans heartbreak when they realised it wasn't real.

"Hundreds of thousands of you had no idea you needed this," the post read.

One commenter said she would be getting in the car this second to get the sweet treat, while others lamented its lack of existence.

A limited edition 'pickle pie' was announced by McDonald's today.

And move over apple and custard, a new pie flavour is in town. McDonald's announced the release of a pickle-flavoured pie today, only available for a limited time.

"You never asked, but we delivered!" the burger giant said in a post to its Facebook page.

KFC announced a twist on a Kiwi Easter tradition – a range of gravy hot cross buns.

"Our freshly baked soft bread rolls are filled with gravy-infused toffee sauce and topped with a sweet and sticky maple glaze and vanilla custard cross," the fast food restaurant said in a Facebook post.

"This is something that sounds like a joke but the more I think on it, the more I'd try it," one commenter said.

Much Moore and Marmite have released a shocking collaboration, a combination of the spread and chocolate ice-cream.

A new ice-cream flavour is also coming to stores courtesy of Much Moore – Premium Choco Mite Swirl.

The combination of Marmite and chocolate received mixed reaction from social media users.

Several were disgusted by the combo, while others were more intrigued.

"Jokes on you, this would actually be amazing and sell really well," one person said.

Gore District Council launched a special edition Hokonui Moonshine flavour inspired by the statue in the Southland town's centre.

Called "Brown Trout", taste testers have reportedly described it as "refreshing, slightly briny, salt and all balanced with the undertones of the Mataura River".

NIWA Weather also got in on the fun as they revealed their new "cat-cast".

"It's a big change, but we're no longer going to be relying on our supercomputer, meteorologists, decades of experience, and artificial intelligence," they said.

"Instead, we're going to be relying on a cat for our daily predictions.

"Please give a warm welcome to our new, furry, forecasting friend!"

Meanwhile, Briscoes announced the arrival of a Briscoes Lady duvet cover "so you can go to sleep feeling iconic".

"TAMMYGATE!! Suing for hurt feelings and emotional damage from not being able to actually buy this," one commenter said.

In sports, the NZ Breakers posted that recently retired captain Tom Abercrombie would be the NZ Bachelor in an upcoming season of the reality show.

Many were bamboozled by the announcement, with one person saying it was the "meanest joke I've seen so far".
