The Prince and Princess of Wales have thanked the public for their support following news of Kate's shock cancer revelation yesterday morning.

The princess revealed in a video yesterday she was undergoing “preventative chemotherapy” after cancer was found during her major abdominal surgery in January.

She described the diagnosis as a “huge shock”.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson said this morning: “The Prince and Princess are both enormously touched by the kind messages from people here in the UK, across the Commonwealth, and around the world in response to Her Royal Highness’ message.

“They are extremely moved by the public's warmth and support and are grateful for their request for privacy at this time."

Following the video’s release, the princess received a torrent of support – with world leaders, celebrities and members of the public sending their well wishes.

The news of Kate’s diagnosis comes after the princess stepped out of the public eye after undergoing abdominal surgery.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,” she said in yesterday's message.

“The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team, therefore, advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”

She said: “As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.”

Kate said she had been “well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal: in my mind, body and spirits.”

She also praised her husband, Prince William, calling him “a great source of comfort and reassurance”.

“We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment.

"My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now, I must focus on making a full recovery,” she said.

She concluded her message by saying: “For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”
