A big job lies ahead to unravel the work already done on the Government's scuttled mega-ferries project, as KiwiRail and regions look ahead to what comes next.
Finance Minister Nicola Willis pulled the plug on the Cook Strait ferry project three months ago after receiving news of additional massive cost blowouts.
Marlborough mayor Nadine Taylor told Q+A: "Having those new boats, adding to the resilience, we wouldn’t be seeing any more breakdowns, they had superior navigation, superior safety and we were looking forward to it racing ahead."
A recent Transport Ministry briefing suggested it was worth exploring whether KiwiRail should continue to operate commercial ferry services across the strait.
With the "iRex" project scrapped, residents and the transport sector in the town are wondering what lies ahead for the Interislander.
