One person died in a Canterbury house fire last night, which needed units from five areas to control the blaze.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand told 1News it responded to the Hurunui blaze at 10.45pm last night, calling in units from Hawarden, Waikari, Hurunui and Waiau. A Culverden unit was also needed.
FENZ confirmed the house, which was "well ablaze" by the time crews reached the scene but is now contained.
A police spokesperson said a person was found dead shortly after emergency services were called.
Hato Hone St John was notified and attended the scene but was not required.
FENZ have said a fire investigator will return to the scene this morning.
