Fourteen firetrucks are battling to bring an uncontained vegetation fire in Ōtaki under control tonight.

The fire is near the former Health Camp at Ōtaki Beach on the Kāpiti Coast.

Details were scarce as the emergency service was busy dealing with the threat, but reports said nine rural appliances, four pump trucks and one command unit were at the scene around 7pm.

FENZ said there was currently no need for evacuations, however local residents reported the Ōtaki emergency hub was open at Otaki Baptist church Cnr Te Manuao and old SH1 for anyone evacuating people from the fire.

The alarm was raised just after 5pm and by 5.45pm the fire was about 4ha in size.

FENZ said no people or structures were at risk. “At the moment the biggest issue is access … there’s a lot of blackberry bushes and coarse bush.”

Earlier, the service said the fire covered an area of approximately 200m x 200m and getting to the blaze was proving a challenge.

"Crews on scene are trying to make access as the terrain makes this difficult," a spokesperson said.
