Man charged after hit-and-run death of Kiwi lawyer in Sydney

A man has been charged over the alleged hit-and-run that killed 28-year-old New Zealand lawyer in Sydney last weekend.

Mitch East, 28, was believed to be walking along Fletcher St in Tamarama, near Bondi, before he was found with critical injuries around 4am on Sunday, Nine reports.

He died of his injuries at the scene.

A 63-year-old man was arrested by investigators at Granville Police station just after 11am (local time).

He has been charged with failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact causing death, dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death and driving while using a mobile phone when not permitted.

He was due to appear in court tomorrow.

East previously worked as a judge's clerk in New Zealand's Supreme Court, as well as serving as a senior advisor to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch terrorist attack, before moving to Sydney.

His employer in Sydney, Arnold Bloch Leibler, paid tribute to East, calling him a highly talented lawyer and popular and valued member of the firm whose loss will be deeply felt, Nine said.
