A New Zealand dermatologist says young people using anti-ageing products to preserve their youthful skin is a "big problem".

In Sweden, 400 pharmacies are banning the sale of anti-ageing skincare to children amid concerns social media is driving children to use the products prematurely.

Those under the age of 15 will now need a parent to buy products which include exfoliating ingredients.

This includes products which contain AHA and BHA acids, along with Vitamin A.

Dermatology Hawke's Bay dermatologist Dr Juber Hafiji told Breakfast the trend creates an "unhealthy relationship" with one's skin.

He added there are steps young people can take to preserve their skin more effectively.

"Wearing sunscreen, eating and drinking healthily, eating five a day, sleeping well, managing stress and doing plenty of exercise."

If children want to use products outside of sunscreen, Hafiji said a simple moisturiser and a gentle cleanser will do the trick.

Hafiji reiterated the use of anti-ageing products at a young age can not only can create psychological problems such as body dysmorphia, it can also cause irritation or an allergic reaction.

"The average younger person today has a lot to deal with… There's a lot of pressure from pop stars and social media on how one should look like."

Educating children on more simple, holistic steps to help their skin will go a long way according to Hafiji.

So when should people use anti-ageing products?

In Sweden, 400 pharmacies are banning the sale of anti-ageing skincare to children.

Hafiji said women lose about 1% of their collagen per year, starting in their mid-twenties.

He suggested an anti-ageing product such as a retinoid can be appropriate at this age, but said consumers "have to be careful" as the products need to be used properly and are also not safe for during pregnancy.

If someone would like to delve into anti-ageing products after they have hit their mid-twenties, Haifiji suggested seeing a specialist who can take them through the correct steps.
