Fire and Emergency NZ believe reports of smoke on Christchurch's Port Hills to be from controlled burn-offs taking place in the wider area this afternoon.

Several crews were sent to the area around 3pm on Friday, not finding "any signs of active fire."

A spokesperson thanked everyone who was vigilant and called 111.

"It's the right thing to do. We are always ready to respond."

Social media posts reported a strong smell of smoke in the Christchurch suburbs of Halswell, Hoon Hay, and Ferrymead, as well as Allandale on Lyttelton Harbour.

The fresh alarm came nine days after Fire and Emergency announced it had completed operations on the Port Hills following last month's fire.

Lasting three weeks, the response beginning on February 14 involved firefighters from 44 brigades, a large number of support and incident management personnel, and FENZ's specialist drone team.

The fire grew to a size of 650 hectares and forced residents to evacuate for days.
