Two new police patrol dogs are ready for duty after graduating from the New Zealand Police Dog Training Centre in Trentham today.
The teams were made up of Auckland-based Constable Mathew Morris and his second dog, 20-month-old Ragner, and Invercargill-based Constable Nic Ah Kuoi and his two-year-old dog Dax, New Zealand Police said today in a media release.
"He’s excited, like I am, to get into work," Morris said.
Morris and Ragner have been working together for the past 18 months, while Ah Kuoi and Dax have been a unit for the past 10 months.
Deputy Commissioner for frontline operations Tania Kura congratulated the two new teams.
"It’s a proud day for you and thank you for your commitment to what is such an essential part of our style of policing in New Zealand," she said.
National coordinator of police dogs, Inspector Todd Southall, said the teams worked "long and hard" to graduate.
“They will be real assets in their districts and the communities they serve," he said.
"All our patrol dog teams play a crucial role in the way we police often unstable and precarious situations on the frontline."
