A man has been charged with the murder of Mongrel Mob Barbarians leader Steven Taiatini in Ōpōtiki last year.
Police believe Taiatini was run down by a four-wheel drive in Ōpōtiki on the night of June 9. He died from his injuries.
A 50-year-old man is set to appear in the Whakatāne District Court today and is charged with Taitini's murder.
He had previously been charged with preventing the course of justice.
Two other men, aged 19 and 41, are also before the courts facing other charges relating to the homicide investigation.
"Police are still interested in hearing from anyone with information that may be useful to us about what happened," a spokesperson said.
In July last year, Detective Inspector Craig Rawlinson said a "series of violent events" in the Bay of Plenty Town took place in the lead-up to Taitini's death.
His tangi became a talking point during last year's election, with hundreds of gang members descending on the town.
Two people were arrested, and shots were fired from a vehicle.
Two schools voluntarily closed their doors, with some parents choosing to keep their kids at home for the day.
"We've never had a situation where schools have closed because gangs are in town, and I appreciate there's a tangi and I get that and there's a loss there and I understand that, but actually funerals happen all across the country and we don't shut schools down because of that," then-opposition leader Christopher Luxon said.
"Why on earth do parents and students just trying to go about their daily business have to be inconvenienced because gangs have come to town for a week?"
