Queensland Police have charged a man with 26 counts of serious animal cruelty after finding dozens of snakes, both dead and alive, in a vehicle during a traffic stop earlier this month.
The 22-year-old man from Moore Park was stopped by officers in the city of Bundaberg on March 2 at around 7.10pm for traffic-related matters.
Police allegedly then located 13 living snakes and 13 dead snakes in various states of decomposition and containment throughout the vehicle.
"The majority of snakes were types of pythons," police said, in a statement.
Detectives attended the scene and seized the snakes, transporting them to a an emergency animal hospital where vets examined and treated the living animals.
Surviving snakes were given to a local wildlife rescue organisation for continued care, a police spokesperson said.
The man would appear before court in April.
Snakes were protected under the legislation, making it illegal to kill, injure or take snakes from the wild.
