One person has been taken to Auckland Hospital in a "moderate condition" after a hazardous substance was detected in Kingsland earlier today.

Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) have confirmed that the substance, which sparked a hazmat response and the attention of 24 firefighters, has been neutralised.

"Crews are checking the house for any other hazards," FENZ said in a statement.

Roads were closed and homes and businesses were being evacuated during a "hazardous substance event" in Auckland this afternoon.

Eight crews and 24 firefighters were on the scene in Kingsland after they were called shortly after 1pm.

Police noted there were "concerns for a person's wellbeing".

"Police are putting cordons in place on New North Rd at the intersection with Bond Street and Sandringham Rd, and at the New North Rd intersection with Western Springs Rd.

Police at a cordon in the Auckland suburb of Kingsland while emergency services dealt with a 'hazardous substance'.

"We are evacuating some homes and businesses in the area as a precaution."

A 1News cameraman on the scene said New North Rd was closed roughly 100 metres in either direction of where the incident was taking place, with St John present also.

Earlier today St John told 1News: "We’re currently on scene at an incident on New North Road in Kingsland with one rapid response vehicle, one ambulance and one operations manager."

Firefighters were dispatched from Balmoral, Grey Lynn, Auckland City, Avondale and the hazmat unit from Ōtāhuhu.
