A Kiwi lawyer has died following a suspected hit-and-run in Sydney in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Mitch East, 28, was believed to be walking along Fletcher St in Tamarama, near Bondi, before he was found with critical injuries around 4am yesterday, Nine reports.

He died of his injuries at the scene.

Police were investigating the circumstances around his death.

Investigators said they were seeking the driver of a white SUV captured on CCTV in the area following the incident.

East previously worked as a judge's clerk in New Zealand's Supreme Court, as well as serving as a senior advisor to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch terrorist attack, before moving to Sydney.

His employer in Sydney, Arnold Bloch Leibler, paid tribute to East, calling him a highly talented lawyer and popular and valued member of the firm whose loss will be deeply felt, Nine said.
