Thousands have reported feeling a 4.6 magnitude earthquake centred 40km north-east of Picton this afternoon.
The quake struck at 2.58pm at a depth of 28km, causing light shaking, according to GeoNet.
Around 9347 people reported feeling the shaking as of 3.10pm.
People took to social media to report their experiences.
"Ooh, that #eqnz gave me a fright! Normally, I hear them coming, but that was a sudden, sharp jolt!" one Twitter user posted.
Another said it was a "really good shake".
A 1News reporter in Wellington reported the earthquake as being "quite a jolt".
