'Free car wash' - Water gushes down Wellington street from burst main

A burst water main was providing residents with a "free car wash" in Aro Valley today.

Joshua Barkman posted footage of the watery scene online, captioning it with the text "free car wash".

Barkman told 1News a smaller leak was reported outside his Aro St flat days ago.

He said on Thursday, the Wellington City Council had "finally sent" someone around to fix it.

He said after the repair it "looked worse" and today, it finally burst. He took the footage of the burst main at around 11.30am.

Barkman said: "[Wellington City Council] is more worried about fixing things that aren't broken."

He added the leaks started after the installation of a bike lane, and said the council is determined to remove parking, but seems slow to fix water issues in the city.

"They seem to have fixed it for now, but I'm sure if you call me back in three days I'll have an even better video."

In a statement, a Wellington Water spokesperson told 1News the leak was first reported to them around 10.55am today.

The leak was "caused by a burst drinking water pipe".

The spokesperson said the pipe had previously been repaired yesterday, but the "temporary seal applied to the footpath yesterday did break up after today's leak".

"This has since been fixed."

The spokesperson confirmed the leak "did not create a sinkhole".
