Police have released images of clothing found on a woman whose body was pulled from Auckland’s Gulf Harbour in a rubbish bag.

It comes as police continue their work to identify the deceased, who is described as an Asian woman, possibly Chinese, middle-aged, and of small stature.

The body was found on Tuesday by members of the public near Laurie Southwick Parade, which is close to Gulf Harbour Marina, shortly after 3pm.

The images show a pair of blue patterned pyjama pants and the emblem from a light-coloured singlet.

Speaking to media this afternoon Acting Detective Inspector Tim Williams said: “We are hoping in releasing these images people will come forward with information that will help us identify this lady.”

“She might be someone’s mother, someone’s sister or even someone’s grandmother.”

“I’m sure you’ll appreciate, in the circumstances of this discovery, it creates some complexities for the investigation.”

Since the discovery, a postmortem has been carried out on the body, with police yet to reveal a cause of death.

He said investigators' next step after identifying the body will be to notify their next of kin.

“We want to reassure the community our investigation is continuing to establish the facts to ascertain the full circumstances around the death of this woman.

“We do appreciate how unsettling this incident is for both the Gulf Harbour and wider community and we want to reassure you we do not believe there is a wider risk to the public in relation to this death,” Williams said.

He also said investigators had liaised with police from Canterbury over speculation the discovery could be linked to the death of Christchurch realtor Yanfei Bao.

He confirmed the body discovered was not Bao.

He also told media that police had been working with Interpol to help identify the woman, should she be from another country.
