Thor's hammer goes under the hammer — for charity

Te Wao Nui Regional Children’s Hospital CEO Guy Ryan with mascot Tiaki and the world’s largest Thor hammer – now on sale.

A giant Thor hammer currently situated on Wellington’s waterfront is going under the hammer, with all proceeds going to Te Wao Nui Regional Children’s Hospital.

The structure is six metres high, and three and a half metres long.

The exact weight of the object was unknown, but it was “very heavy,” according to Wellington NZ.

“Getting it to the waterfront was a challenge and getting it from there to a new home will need a bit of planning. Anyone thinking of placing a bid needs to factor that in,” Wellington NZ’s Siobhan Tanoa said.

Mjölnir – the official name of the Thor hammer – was made to promote Marvel: Earth’s Mightiest Exhibition, which would close at the end of April.

Te Wao Nui Regional Children’s Hospital chief executive Guy Ryan said they were thrilled to be the beneficiary of the fundraising initiative.

“Auctioning off Thor’s largest hammer is not just about acquiring a piece of art; it's about creating a brighter healthier future for the thousands of Kiwi kids from around central Aotearoa who rely on the hospital's care every year. Thank you for being the superheroes our communities need,” Guy Ryan said.

The hammer is listed with a $1 reserve on Trademe, and the auction will run for 10 days.
