A 3.4 magnitude earthquake struck 5km east of Christchurch this evening.

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake caused "light" shaking in Christchurch this evening.

Geonet said the shake occurred at 5.02pm on Thursday.

The quake was centred 5km east of Christchurch at a depth of 10km.

It was felt widely across the city, with 3780 people reporting they felt the earthquake.

One social media user said it was a "decent wee shuffle", another described it as a "short, sharp jolt."
