AI backdrops used at infamous Glasgow Willy Wonka event for sale

March 14, 2024

Photo backdrops used at the now-infamous Glasgow Willy Wonka experience are up for auction.

The event, which has been immortalised on social media, was billed as an immersive experience that transported guests into the (copyright-free) world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

However, upon arrival visitors weren’t met with chocolate rivers, but a barren warehouse – sparsely decorated with props.

Part of what made the event so puzzling was its use of AI in marketing and the scripts given to actors.

Now, three of the backgrounds used at the event, believed to be AI-generated, have appeared on eBay, with the auction currently sitting at £760 (NZ$1,578).

The seller, Michael Kasparis, a local record store’s online manager, explained to CNN how his friend managed to get his hands on the backdrops.

“He has a workshop underneath the venue that hosted the Willy Wonka experience, and… the day after everything blew up, he was just at the bins and saw all this stuff lying there,” he said.

“He thought ‘I’ll just take it’ and was joking to me and some other friends he had this…”

He said the money made through the auction would go towards medical aid for Palestinians in Gaza.

“I’m anticipating getting into four figures,” Kasparis said, “which is what I’m hoping for.”

Frustrated with the event, families at the event became so angry that they called the police – and the event was cancelled.

A sign, announcing the events cancellation was also sold, fetching £840 (NZ$1,744) to be donated to a Glasgow hospital.
