Residents in a city in Japan’s west have been told to avoid a cat which reportedly fell into a vat of dangerous chemicals.

Grainy security footage captured the cat making its escape, and yellow pawprints were found on the factory floor at Nomura Plating in Fukuyama.

Residents have been told not to touch the feline should they find it, although no guidance on its appearance has been given.

They have been told to look out for a cat behaving strangely.

It is thought the unfortunate moggy fell into a vat of Hexavalent chromium, a highly acidic and carcinogenic chemical, the BBC reported.

A company spokesperson told AFP: "The incident woke us up to the need to take measures to prevent small animals like cats from sneaking in, which is something we had never anticipated before.”

Hexavalent chromium can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems and blindness.
