KiwiRail has had to cancel passengers' sailings on one of its Interislander ships until Saturday due to a fault with the lifeboat system.
Sailings of Kaiarahi have been restricted to freight only until 1pm on Saturday, 16 March.
The decision was made after a scheduled maintenance survey of the vessel found a “fault” with the lifeboat reengagement system – which re-attaches the lifeboats after use.
“While the safety of the ship was unaffected, further testing revealed a faulty part requiring replacement,” Interislander general manager Duncan Roy said.
“As safety is our top priority, Kaiarahi sailings have been restricted to freight only while the replacement part is sourced.”
All affected customers have been offered alternative sailings.
“If customers cannot use the alternative sailing offered, they can apply for a later sailing at no extra cost. Otherwise, refunds are available,” Roy said.
“We regret the disruption, but safety is our top priority.”
