Muslim leaders have met with the Prime Minister ahead of the fifth anniversary of the mosque shootings.
Christopher Luxon held a private meeting at a Christchurch hotel with members from Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre.
Commemorations will be held on Friday for the 51 people who were murdered in the terrorist attack on March 15, 2019.
Imam Abdul Alabi Lateef, from the Linwood Islamic Centre, said there was no conversation about the Government’s plans to change firearm laws, to allow competitive shooters access to military-style guns.
"We didn’t talk about the firearms at all.
"We have to give him respect because he didn’t talk about it so I think it will be disrespectful for us to ask him such a question," said Lateef.
Linwood Islamic Charitable Trust secretary Said Mostafa said he had "full trust" in the Government to do the right thing.
"This is a matter affecting every Kiwi and I’m sure… it will be looked at thoroughly.
"It would be premature to be talking about it now without having the conversation."
Mostafa said Luxon had a "great attitude" and was a "real honest Kiwi bloke".
He said they talked about the needs of their community, and Luxon expressed his willingness to work with them.
