Interislander’s Kaiarahi ferry services have been cancelled until Friday after a "mechanical fault" was found during testing.

Four services between Wellington and Picton have been affected, including: the 6.30pm sailing from Picton on March 12; the 7.30am sailing from Wellington on March 13; the 1pm sailing from Picton on March 13; and the 6.30pm sailing from Wellington on March 13.

In a statement, the general manager of Interislander operations, Duncan Roy, told 1News Kaiarahi services "have been restricted to freight only while a replacement part is sourced".

"All affected customers will be contacted and offered an alternative sailing."

Customers who were unable to take the alternative service "can apply for a later sailing at no extra cost, otherwise refunds are available", he said.

“We regret the disruption, but safety is our top priority.”

Updates on Interislander ferry arrivals and departures could be found on the Interislander website.
