The mother of a missing Tauranga man has made an emotional plea on the two-year anniversary of his disappearance.

Anaesthetics registrar Dr David Holland was last seen at his Papamoa Beach home on March 11, 2022.

Despite several inquiries being carried out over the two years since the 31-year-old's disappearance, police say his whereabouts are still unknown.

Police have issued a statement on behalf of David's mother Karen, who said that her youngest son had lived in New Zealand since 2017 and had recently applied for residency when he went missing.

"Life changed forever when I took the late-night call from New Zealand telling me that there was concern about his safety."

David was initially thought to be lost at sea, and later CCTV footage of someone that could have possibly been David walking toward a state highway led to "other theories developing and hence, no closure".

Karen said that "clever, multi-talented, sporty, caring, kind, thoughtful" David was much missed by family and friends in New Zealand and the UK: "The memories that we have of David are so precious."

She said that David is her "waking thought" and her "last thought at night".

"Dealing with ambiguous loss, grieving, looking for answers is part of my life.

"Grief doesn't go away and can be incredibly lonely. No parent chooses this road."

She hopes for help from communities all over the country.

"I'm appealing to people all over New Zealand to come forward with any information that they may have linked to his disappearance or his current whereabouts, if he is still with us.

"If you are connected to his disappearance in any way, or know someone that may have been, please contact the police.

"And if you see this appeal yourself David, please come back to us."
