Person dies after being rescued from the water at Omaha Beach

One person is dead after being rescued from the water at a popular beach just north of Auckland this afternoon.

Police were called to Omaha Beach around 3pm this afternoon to reports of a person needing help in the water at the beach's north end.

"Emergency services responded to Ida Way, Omaha where the person had been brought into the shore by Surf Life Saving New Zealand," police said in a statement.

"Attempts were made to resuscitate the person but sadly they could not be resuscitated."

The incident will be referred to the Coroner.
