Police have confirmed the death of an infant after a fire at a South Taranaki property.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) said it received "multiple calls" shortly after 4am this morning after a property on Fitzroy St in Normanby went up in flames.
Three support crews and two tankers were called to the scene and found the house "fully engulfed".
"The fire is currently not being treated as suspicious."
Police and FENZ investigators are at the scene and a scene examination is underway, along with enquiries in the area as part of the initial stages of an investigation.
Police said they are working hard to establish the circumstances.
"Support is being offered to those involved," said Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Louise Prendergast.
"We know that the community will be shocked and saddened by this incident.
"Police will be visible in the area while enquiries are underway and further information will be released proactively when available."
