A special delivery was made to a South Auckland police station last month when an alleged mail theft handed herself in.
Counties Manukau police had been investigating alleged thefts after noticing locals discussing the issue on social media.
In January, a complaint was filed and police managed to secure CCTV footage of a theft and were looking for a vehicle of interest, making further enquiries at an address linked to it.
“As a result, the woman has brought herself into the Pukekohe Police Station a few days later," Senior Sergeant MJ Riddle said.
A 44-year-old woman was charged with theft and would appear in the Pukekohe District Court on March 28.
Riddle encouraged locals to continue reporting any mail thefts — as well as keeping an eye on their parcels and letters in an attempt to stamp out the crime.
"Our community should be able to receive parcels and mail without concern of interference, but unfortunately, there are people in our communities who take advantage of opportunities to commit thefts from mailboxes and front porches.
"We encourage anyone who has been the victim of dishonesty offending to report it as soon as possible," she said.
She offered some advice, including frequently checking letterboxes, putting a hold on mail while away, asking couriers to hide any packages ordered, install security cameras, and choose to click-and-collect when possible.
"If you see any suspicious activity, such as people loitering around vehicles or looking into car windows, please contact Police immediately by phoning 111."
