Part of a major state highway is closed following a two-car crash in Tasman this afternoon.
Police say they were called to SH60 / Tākaka Hill Highway, near Bates Rd and Canaan Rd, around 12.10pm.
One person was critically injured in the crash, while another was in a serious condition.
The serious crash unit has been advised.
"The road is closed and will remain so for the next few hours while the road is cleared, and a scene examination is conducted," police said.
The closure effectively seals off road access to the Golden Bay region of Tasman.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and delay their journey if possible.
NZTA Waka Kotahi has confirmed no alternative detours or routes were available, as the highway would be closed for "several hours".
