Hurricanes midfielder Jordie Barrett has been banned for three weeks for his red card against the Reds.
Barrett was sent off for a high tackle in the 56th minute on Jordan Petaia in his side’s 38-33 golden-point victory in Melbourne. It was Barrett’s 100th game for the Hurricanes.
The ban was announced this afternoon after he faced a foul play review committee.
Barrett was found guilty of contravening Law 9.13: A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously.
It means he will miss the derby against the Blues at Sky Stadium on Saturday, plus an away game against the Crusaders and Rebels in Palmerston North.
Sanzaar’s ruling said there was no mitigation for Barrett to avoid a ban.
Barrett was shown a yellow card that was upgraded to red after a review.
Committee chair Stephen Hardy said his act of foul play was always illegal.
“Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including from the player and submissions from his legal representative, Aaron Lloyd, the Foul Play Review Committee upheld the red card given to the player under Law 9.13,” Hardy said in a statement.
“Following the World Rugby Head Contact Process, the FPRC assessed the player's actions as having directly contacted the head, at high speed, with high force and while the player's body position was always upright into the collision.”
