Controlled detonation planned for explosive in Auckland park

March 6, 2024

Police have asked people to avoid the area around an Auckland reserve after a "small homemade explosive device" was discovered.

Police said the explosive device, which was found at a reserve near Seabrook Avenue, was reported to police around 2pm today after a neighbour noticed it.

The Defence Force was called to the scene to safely dispose of the device.

Police have confirmed the controlled detonation would take place at Lawson Park.

Residents near Lawson Park, on the corner of Seabrook Avenue and Willerton Avenue "can expect to hear a loud bang as the device is detonated and should not be alarmed," police said, adding there was "no risk to public safety."

Police said there were no road closures or cordons in place but there would be a visible police presence in the area.
