Frontrunner Republican nominee Donald Trump has again confused Barack Obama for current US President Joe Biden at a rally in Virginia yesterday, fuelling further speculation around Trump's cognitive fitness for the presidency.
The 77-year-old was speaking to the crowd in Richmond about settling the war between Russia and Ukraine when he made the gaffe, The Guardian reports.
"[Russian president Vladimir] Putin has so little respect for [Barack] Obama that he's starting to throw around the nuclear word," he said.
Trump's remark was met with silence from the crowd.
It's not the first time Trump has confused the pair, after referring to Obama — rather than Biden — when recalling an interview involving Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and again during a rally in Iowa in October.
In January, Trump told his supporters he deliberately conflated Biden and Obama to suggest that "Obama is running the show".
It follows a string of blunders in recent months, with Trump confusing his rival for the Republican nomination, Nikki Haley, with former House speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Trump also appeared to mix up the name of his wife, former First Lady Melania Trump, who he referred to as "Mercedes" in a speech last month. However, his supporters denied it was a mistake, saying he had been referring to political commentator Mercedes Schlapp.
Similar criticism has swirled around Biden who, at 81 years old, is four years older than Trump.
The current US president on Friday appeared to twice confuse Gaza with Ukraine as he announced plans to airdrop aid to Palestinians.
"In the coming days, we’re going to join with our friends in Jordan and others who are providing airdrops of additional food and supplies into Ukraine," he said.
He again mistakenly referred to Ukraine as he floated the possibility of a marine corridor into Gaza.
Biden and Trump are the oldest people to run for the US presidency.
