1 'US-style crime hell': MTA calls for action amid brazen Auckland robbery

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) has warned we’re “heading for US-style crime hell” following the brazen daylight robbery of an Auckland service station over the weekend.

CCTV footage shows a Western Springs Caltex worker fleeing as a group of eight people – some armed with hammers – stormed the counter.

MTA chief executive Lee Marshall said fuel station operators were "headed for the kind of hell you see in Florida where gas station operators need to hide behind inch-thick steel bars for protection".

"We seriously need to ask ourselves if that's a future we want."

2 Strong winds rip roof off Greymouth home amid 'severe' thunderstorms

Strong winds have ripped the roof off a West Coast home as "severe" thunderstorms batter parts of the country today.

The roof was lifted off the residential property in Cobden, north of Greymouth, at 8.45am.

MetService meteorologist John Law said warnings are in place from Waikato down to Wellington for a "very unsettled start to the week".

3 Malaysia may renew hunt for lost flight MH370

Malaysia’s government says it may renew the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 – nearly 10 years to the day it crashed.

The Boeing 777 plane was carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it vanished from radar shortly after take-off on March 8, 2014.

Now, US tech firm Ocean Infinity’s proposed a fresh search in the southern Indian Ocean, where the plane is believed to have gone down.

4 Far North death: Murder charge laid after alleged stabbing

A man has been charged with murder after a man was fatally stabbed at a home in the Far North last night.

Police say emergency services were called to a property on Iwitaua Rd, Mangamuka, around 9pm following reports of an altercation. The man died at the scene.

A 50-year-old man will appear in court today charged with murder.

5 Two major banks lower some interest rates

In some welcome news for homeowners, ASB and ANZ’s lowered some mortgage rates amid the Reserve Bank holding the OCR at 5.5%.

Last week, ASB lowered its 18-month mortgage rate from 7.15% to 6.89%. Now it's dropped its one-year mortgage rate by 10 basis points to 7.29%. It's also trimmed its two-year rate four basis points to 6.85%.

ANZ also today dropped its one-year (7.39% to 7.24%), 18-month (7.15% to 6.89%), two-year (6.89% to 6.79%) and three-year (6.75% to 6.65%) rates.

Hamish Kerr’s smashed the New Zealand record – and equalled the Oceania record – to win gold at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

The 27-year-old jumped 2.36m, after earlier clearing 2.31m – a mark that was beyond his rivals Sanghyeok Woo and Shelby McEwen. Shortly afterwards, Geordie Beamish won gold in the men's 1500m final.
