One dead after two-vehicle crash on SH1 south of Whangārei

One person has died following a crash on State Highway 1 near Mata, south of Whangārei, this afternoon.

The two-vehicle crash occurred between Totara Rd and Hewlett Rd. It saw SH1 in the area closed in both directions closed for around three hours.

The road has since re-opened, Waka Kotahi NZTA said around 6.30pm.

Emergency services were notified of the crash at around 2.33pm.

One person received critical injuries and died at the scene, police said.

"Police extend our condolences to their family and friends at this time."

A second person received serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway.
