New Zealand's sevens teams both on the brink in Vancouver

February 26, 2024

New Zealand’s men’s and women’s sevens teams are in the finals of the Vancouver series tournament today after semifinal victories over France and Canada respectively.

Not even France star Antoine Dupont could save the French this morning, the high-profile XVs halfback in his first sevens series weekend coming on in the final five minutes of the All Blacks sevens’ 28-26 victory.

Starved for possession, the French survived on scraps but Dupont did make a scything break, only to see his pass knocked on, and stole the ball in his territory in the final 30 seconds to set up a consolation try.

It was a high-quality performance from the All Blacks sevens, who made few mistakes but were on the wrong side of the penalty count.

They led 14-12 at halftime and made their move in the second half, scoring two converted tries – one for Akuila Rokolisoa (his second of the match), and, a minute later, to Scott Curry - to give themselves a valuable points buffer.

Both sides scored four tries but in the end it was New Zealand’s physical style and perfect kicking for goal which got them home.

The All Blacks sevens will play Argentina in the final which is scheduled for 2.23pm today.

The Black Ferns sevens scored three unconverted tries in their 15-7 victory over Canada and will face France in the final after the French upset Australia 21-19 in their semifinal.

Speedster Michaela Blyde scored two in the first half, with Portia Woodman-Wickliffe over in the second half as the inexperienced home side stuck to their task.

The Black Ferns sevens' final is scheduled for 1.43pm.
